Forklift Fiascos: How Computer Vision is Lifting Warehouse Safety to New Heights

Forklift Fiascos: How Computer Vision is Lifting Warehouse Safety to New Heights

Introduction

Forklifts play a crucial role in many warehouses, streamlining logistics and carrying heavy loads. However, they can also be a source of serious accidents and injuries. The Bureau of Labor and Statistics reports that nearly 100 workers are killed, and another 20,000 are seriously injured in forklift-related incidents annually. So, how can we tackle this pressing issue? That’s where we help! Kibis is a video intelligence and computer vision platform that is transforming the way companies address forklift safety.

Nearly 100 workers are killed, and another 20,000 are seriously injured in forklift-related incidents annually

The Forklift Problem

One of our most recent clients came to us with a forklift problem that is all too prevalent in the industry. They knew the number of accidents that occurred in their warehouse but wanted to understand the bigger picture. Their challenge was to identify unsafe practices and behaviors that didn’t necessarily result in accidents but were merely accidents waiting to happen. By catching these near-misses, they could proactively address safety concerns and protect their employees.

Why Kibsi’s Video Intelligence is the Answer

Kibsi’s video intelligence and computer vision capabilities allow this company to analyze video feeds in real-time to identify instances where forklifts get too close to other equipment or people or when other safety concerns arise. By using our platform, the company can now gain insights into near-misses and potential hazards, which were previously difficult to quantify. This information is invaluable for making informed decisions and implementing changes to improve warehouse forklift safety.

How Kibsi Works

Our client connected their existing video cameras to Kibsi, allowing the platform to monitor their warehouse in real-time using computer vision. A custom Kibsi App was created in about 10 minutes to detect and track forklifts, people, and other objects in the warehouse. The App was designed initially to capture statistics for analysis and education however, the longer-time goal is to send alerts when forklifts got too close to other equipment or people, enabling the company to identify potentially dangerous situations and react immediately.

Kibsi’s no-code platform and pre-built detectors made it easy for the client to build and deploy their video intelligence app. They could quickly define detection zones and track the movement of forklifts and people within those zones, gathering valuable data on near-miss events and other forklift safety concerns.

The Results

Even in our testing, the client was able to get a clear picture of how often unsafe practices occurred in their warehouse (spoiler alert: it was way more than they were expecting!). They could then use this data to create targeted safety training programs, enforce safety protocols, and make necessary adjustments to the warehouse layout to minimize risks.

<With Kibsi>, The client was able to get a clear picture of how often unsafe practices occurred in their warehouse (spoiler alert: it was way more than they were expecting!)

As a result, the company is confident that they’ll see a significant reduction in forklift-related accidents and near-misses. Employee morale will also improve, knowing that worker safety is a priority, and the company’s reputation will be enhanced for being proactive in addressing warehouse forklift safety concerns. And all of this gets accomplished without significant tech overhauls or new equipment as they already had plenty of surveillance cameras on the docks they want to monitor.

The Future of Warehouse Forklift Safety

Our client’s experience is just one example of how Kibsi’s video intelligence and computer vision technology can revolutionize forklift safety in warehouses and other industries. With the ability to analyze video feeds in real-time and gather actionable insights, Kibsi enables organizations to be proactive in identifying and addressing forklift safety concerns. Companies no longer have to rely solely on accident reports to make changes; they can now actively prevent accidents from happening in the first place.

By leveraging Kibsi’s video intelligence and computer vision capabilities, we can create a safer working environment for all employees and reduce the number of accidents and injuries related to forklift operations. In a world where safety should never be compromised, Kibsi is here to help lift warehouse forklift safety to new heights.
